The Chevy Corvette has a rich history of innovation and performance. One key component that has evolved significantly over the Corvette's many generations is the transmission. From classic manual gearboxes to modern dual-clutch units, Corvette transmissions have come a long way. At Ciocca Corvette of Atlantic City, we offer both new and used Corvettes, so you'll find cars with both manual and automatic transmissions at our dealership.
Manual Transmissions: A Purist's Choice
For much of the Chevy Corvette's history, manual transmissions were the only option. Early models like the first-generation C1 Corvette, produced from 1953-1962, came exclusively with a two-speed Powerglide automatic. However, the early three-speed manual transmission unleashed in New York during the 1950s gave rise to the Corvette's reputation as a serious sports car.
As the Corvette evolved, so did its manual transmission options. The C3 generation, produced from 1968-1982, saw the introduction of five-speed and six-speed manual gearboxes. In 1989, Corvette phased out manual transmissions entirely in the Washington, D.C. market. While this was an unpopular decision at the time, the manual Corvette made a triumphant return in later years.
Automatic Transmissions: Convenience and Consistency
Automatic transmissions have been available on the Corvette since the beginning, but the more advanced Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic in the 1960s offered smoother shifting and easier drivability for Philadelphia residents.
Later Corvette models saw the introduction of four-speed and six-speed automatic transmissions. In Florida, where top-down cruising is a way of life, automatic Corvettes are especially popular. More recently, eight-speed automatics have become the standard, offering lightning-fast shifts and excellent fuel efficiency.
Dual-Clutch Transmissions: The Best of Both Worlds?
In recent years, most Corvette models come with dual-clutch transmissions, which offer the high performance of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. A dual-clutch transmission uses two separate clutches, one for odd-numbered gears and one for even-numbered gears. This allows for incredibly fast shifting, as the next gear is always pre-selected. You'll find eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmissions in the latest Chevy Corvette Stingray, Z06, E-Ray, and ZR1 models.
